Nobel Prize-winning economist Daron Acemoglu has been making waves in the world of social science with his groundbreaking research and innovative ideas. His contributions to the field have earned him the title of one of the “World’s Top Thinkers” by the popular press. And now, he is set to receive yet another prestigious award – the 2025 Sage-CASBS Award.

The Sage-CASBS Award, established in 2013, is a joint initiative between the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) and SAGE Publishing. It recognizes outstanding achievements in the social and behavioral sciences and is awarded every two years to an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of social science research.

Daron Acemoglu, a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Sage-CASBS Award for his groundbreaking work in the field of economics. His research has focused on the role of institutions in economic development and the impact of political and economic institutions on economic growth and inequality.

Acemoglu’s work has been widely recognized and has had a significant impact on the field of economics. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious John Bates Clark Medal, often referred to as the “baby Nobel” for his contributions to economic theory and empirical research. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2020, along with his colleague James A. Robinson, for their book “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty”.

The selection committee for the Sage-CASBS Award was impressed by Acemoglu’s extensive body of work and his ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice. His research has not only contributed to our understanding of economic development but has also had real-world implications. His work has been instrumental in shaping policies and strategies for promoting economic growth and reducing inequality in developing countries.

In addition to his groundbreaking research, Acemoglu is also known for his commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of social scientists. He has supervised numerous doctoral students and has been a mentor to many young researchers. His passion for teaching and his ability to make complex economic concepts accessible to a wider audience have earned him a reputation as an exceptional educator.

The Sage-CASBS Award will be presented to Acemoglu at a special ceremony in 2025, where he will also deliver a lecture on his research. This award not only recognizes his outstanding achievements but also provides a platform for him to share his insights and ideas with a wider audience.

Upon receiving the news of the award, Acemoglu expressed his gratitude and excitement, stating, “I am deeply honored to receive the 2025 Sage-CASBS Award. It is a great privilege to be recognized by my peers in the social and behavioral sciences. I am grateful for this opportunity to share my research and ideas with a wider audience and hope to inspire future generations of social scientists.”

The Sage-CASBS Award is a testament to Acemoglu’s exceptional contributions to the field of economics and his dedication to advancing social science research. His work has not only shaped our understanding of economic development but has also had a significant impact on policies and strategies for promoting growth and reducing inequality. We look forward to seeing what groundbreaking research he will produce in the years to come and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.
