As part of the Angola 2025 Plan, instigated by the Angolan government to enhance the electrification rate using eco-friendly energy sources, more than one million individuals in 60 communes across Angola are set to benefit from public grid electricity.
Concurrent with Angola’s electrification endeavor, a ceremony for the endorsement and laying of the cornerstone for the Moxico Province Rural Electrification Project was held on Thursday afternoon, November 16, in the Municipality of Luau. The event, conducted in Luau, was overseen by the Minister of Energy and Water, accompanied by the provincial Governor, Ernesto Muangala, and the ambassadors of Portugal, Francisco Alegre, and Germany, Stefan Traumann. Notable figures from the energy sector, including representatives from DNNER, PRODE, ENDE, and the project’s patron, the esteemed musician Matias Damásio, also participated in the event.
Subsequent to the endorsement ceremony and cornerstone laying, a contract was inked between the state-owned company PRODEL, representing the Angolan government as the project proprietor, and the Portuguese Group MCA, functioning as the principal contractor.
Minister João Baptista Borges underscored that this initiative is one of President João Lourenço’s primary focuses, with the goal of ensuring electricity access for thousands of families in remote regions of the country, thereby nurturing economic and social development in these areas.
The project encompasses the design and execution of engineering works, the installation of hybrid systems for photovoltaic generation with lithium-ion battery storage, and the extension of the power grid with new distribution networks across 12 localities. This endeavor will empower the nation to adopt cleaner and more cost-effective energy solutions, with intentions to connect approximately 59,000 households via prepaid systems, benefiting over 370,000 individuals.
In Luau, the project is projected to serve around 59,370 residents. A photovoltaic park housing 55,500 solar panels with a production capacity of 58 MWp is set to be established.
The Luau Rural Electrification Project boasts a budget surpassing €1,027,587,914.00, with a completion timeline of three years (36 months) from the date of contract signing.
Following the event, the minister visited the municipality of Luena to evaluate the progress of the city’s photovoltaic park implementation, which is 95% physically complete and will possess a capacity of 26.906 MWdc. João Baptista Borges João Baptista Borges
