3 times when rain knocked South Africa out of ICC events

in Sports
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Rain, ICC tournaments, and South Africa – a combination that has never ended well. For years, South Africa has been plagued by the unfortunate timing of rain during crucial matches in ICC events. Despite being one of the strongest teams in world cricket, they have faced heartbreaks and disappointments due to rain playing the role of a villain. Let’s take a look at three such incidents where rain knocked South Africa out of ICC tournaments.

The first incident dates back to the 1992 World Cup, where South Africa was making its debut in the tournament. They had a strong team led by the legendary all-rounder, Clive Rice. The team had a dream start, winning their first three matches and looking like a strong contender for the title. However, their fourth match against England was interrupted by rain, and the match was reduced to 45 overs per side. South Africa, batting first, managed to score 236 runs, a decent total at that time. But rain played spoilsport again, and the match was abandoned, resulting in a tie. As per the rules, England advanced to the next round due to a better net run rate, and South Africa’s dream run came to an end.

The second incident took place in the 2003 World Cup, where South Africa was once again a strong contender for the title. They had a star-studded team with the likes of Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, and Shaun Pollock. In the group stage, they had a crucial match against Sri Lanka, which was reduced to 45 overs per side due to rain. South Africa, batting first, posted a competitive total of 268 runs. However, rain interrupted the match again, and the target was revised to 229 runs in 45 overs for Sri Lanka. Despite a valiant effort by the South African bowlers, Sri Lanka managed to chase down the target with just two balls to spare, knocking South Africa out of the tournament.

The most recent and perhaps the most heartbreaking incident took place in the 2015 World Cup. South Africa had a strong team, led by the charismatic AB de Villiers, and was considered one of the favorites to win the tournament. In the semi-final against New Zealand, South Africa was in a commanding position, needing just 12 runs off 7 balls to win the match. However, rain interrupted the match, and the target was revised to 298 runs in 43 overs. The pressure of the revised target got to the South African batsmen, and they fell short by just one run, once again ending their dream of winning an ICC event.

These incidents not only highlight the unfortunate role of rain in South Africa’s journey in ICC tournaments but also raise questions about the rules and regulations regarding rain interruptions. In all three incidents, South Africa was on the receiving end of the revised targets due to rain, which ultimately led to their defeat. It is a bitter pill to swallow for a team that has consistently performed well in ICC events but has been denied the opportunity to lift the trophy due to external factors like rain.

However, despite these setbacks, South Africa has always bounced back and continued to be a strong force in world cricket. They have produced some of the greatest players in the history of the game and have always been a tough opponent for any team. The team’s resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles are commendable and serve as an inspiration for all cricket fans.

In conclusion, rain may have played the role of a villain in South Africa’s journey in ICC tournaments, but it has not dampened their spirits. The team continues to strive for excellence and has shown that they are capable of achieving great things despite the odds. As fans, we can only hope that in the future, rain will not be a deciding factor in South Africa’s fate in ICC events, and they will finally get the chance to lift the coveted trophy.
