Giant battery to store solar and wind energy to be created on site of coal-fired power station

Reading Time: 3 mins read

The UK is known for its commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. And now, the country is taking another great leap towards a greener future with the proposed battery energy storage plant at the old Uskmouth power station.

The project, which is set to be one of the largest in the UK, is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s energy landscape. Located at the old Uskmouth power station in Newport, Wales, the plant will play a crucial role in the transition towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly energy system.

The idea behind the battery energy storage plant is to store excess energy generated from renewable sources, such as wind and solar power, and release it when needed. This will not only help to balance the supply and demand of energy but also reduce the reliance on traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas.

One of the main advantages of the proposed plant is its location. The old Uskmouth power station, which was decommissioned in 2015, provides an ideal site for the project. The existing infrastructure, including the transmission line and grid connection, will make it easier and more cost-effective to set up the plant. Moreover, the plant will also make use of the existing land, reducing the need for new construction and minimizing its impact on the environment.

The project is a joint venture between SIMEC Atlantis Energy and GE Renewable Energy. SIMEC Atlantis Energy is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy projects, while GE Renewable Energy is a global leader in clean energy solutions. This partnership brings together the expertise and resources needed to make this project a success.

The proposed battery energy storage plant is expected to have a storage capacity of 200 megawatts, enough to power up to 200,000 homes for two hours. This will not only help to meet the growing energy demands of the UK but also provide a reliable backup in case of any disruptions in the energy supply.

The plant will also have a positive economic impact on the local community. During its construction phase, it is expected to create hundreds of jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses. Once operational, it will continue to provide employment opportunities and contribute to the economic growth of the region.

Another significant advantage of the proposed plant is its contribution towards reducing carbon emissions. The UK has set ambitious targets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and this project will play a crucial role in achieving that goal. By storing excess renewable energy and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, this plant will help to reduce the country’s carbon footprint and combat climate change.

The project has already received all the necessary planning permissions and is currently in the final stages of development. With construction expected to begin later this year and become operational by 2023, the proposed battery energy storage plant is well on its way to becoming a reality.

The UK government has also shown its support for the project by providing funding through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. This highlights the importance of this project in the country’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system.

The proposed battery energy storage plant at the old Uskmouth power station is a significant step towards a greener and more environmentally friendly future. It will not only provide a reliable and efficient energy storage solution, but also contribute to the economic growth of the region and help the UK achieve its climate goals. With its location, storage capacity, and strong partnerships, this project has all the right ingredients to be a game-changer in the UK’s energy sector.
