IPL 2025: Why was Ryan Rickelton given not out? Klaasen’s costly mistake earns MI star reprieve

The IPL season of 2025 has certainly been an exciting one, with nail-biting matches and unexpected turn of events. However, one moment that has captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts and left them scratching their heads is the incident that took place during the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday. The match, which was seen as a must-win for both teams, turned out to be a game changer for MI’s Ryan Rickelton, who was given a reprieve by the umpires after a costly mistake made by RR’s wicketkeeper, Heinrich Klaasen.

The incident that unfolded in the 15th over of MI’s innings left fans on the edge of their seats. Krunal Pandya, who was on strike, played a beautiful shot towards mid-wicket and set off for a quick single. Rickelton responded to his call and ran to the non-striker’s end. However, Klaasen, who was standing behind the stumps, fumbled with the ball and failed to gather it cleanly. In his attempt to dislodge the bails, he accidentally knocked the stumps over with his gloves, resulting in the ball rolling away towards the boundary.

The on-field umpires, after consulting with the third umpire and taking into consideration the new ICC rule of “obstructing the field,” declared Rickelton not out and awarded MI with five penalty runs. The decision was met with mixed reactions, with RR claiming that Rickelton had deliberately changed his path to obstruct the fielder. However, the replays showed that Rickelton had changed his line to avoid a collision with Klaasen, who was running towards the stumps.

This decision proved to be a game changer for MI, as Rickelton went on to score an unbeaten 78 off 45 balls, leading his team to a comfortable victory. The young and talented cricketer showed remarkable composure and played a crucial role in securing a spot for MI in the playoffs.

However, the real question that arises is whether the decision to give Rickelton not out was fair or not. As a cricket enthusiast, I believe that the umpires made the right call. The new ICC rule states that a batsman should not be given out if he inadvertently obstructs the fielder while attempting to avoid a collision. In this case, it was evident that Rickelton was not trying to obstruct the fielder, but rather trying to save himself from getting hurt.

Moreover, Klaasen’s mistake behind the stumps was a costly one for RR. As a wicketkeeper, it is crucial to have a firm grip on the ball and collect it cleanly. In this situation, Klaasen’s fumble and subsequent mistake proved to be a turning point for the match. As a result of his error, MI was awarded five penalty runs, which ultimately helped them in clinching the victory.

This incident highlights the importance of staying calm and composed in high-pressure situations. Rickelton could have easily lost his cool and protested against the umpire’s decision, but he chose to focus on his game and capitalize on the opportunity that was presented to him. His resilience and determination paid off, and he emerged as the hero of the match.

In conclusion, the decision to give Ryan Rickelton not out after Klaasen’s costly mistake behind the stumps is one that will be debated for a long time. However, what cannot be denied is the exceptional display of sportsmanship and skill shown by Rickelton, who made the most of his second chance and proved his worth as a valuable player for MI. This incident will serve as a reminder to all cricketers to stay focused, stay grounded, and never give up, no matter how challenging the situation may be.
