April 21 marks the celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Day, a global event that recognizes the power and potential of human creativity and innovation to bring positive change to our world. On this day, we are reminded of the importance of fostering an environment that nurtures and encourages creativity and innovation in all aspects of our lives.

In line with this year’s theme, “Creativity and Innovation for a Sustainable Future”, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Director Yasmine Sherif has released a statement highlighting the crucial role of creativity and innovation in achieving quality education for children and youth affected by crisis.

As the world faces unprecedented challenges, it is more important than ever to harness the power of creativity and innovation to build a better future for the most vulnerable and marginalized children. According to Sherif, “Creativity and innovation are at the heart of Education Cannot Wait’s mission to provide quality education to children and youth caught in crisis and conflict settings.”

Education Cannot Wait is the first global fund dedicated to education in emergencies and protracted crises. It was launched at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 to address the urgent education needs of children affected by conflicts, natural disasters, and other humanitarian emergencies. Since then, ECW has been working tirelessly to bridge the gap in education for 75 million children and youth living in crisis-affected countries.

In her statement, Sherif emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address the complex challenges faced by children living in crisis situations. “We cannot continue to use traditional approaches to education in emergency settings. We need to be bold and think outside the box to reach children who are often left behind,” she said.

For Sherif, creativity and innovation are not just buzzwords, but essential tools to provide quality education to children affected by crisis. ECW has been at the forefront of promoting creative and innovative approaches to education in emergencies. From mobile learning and radio programs to community-based education and accelerated learning programs, ECW has been using a wide range of innovative solutions to reach children and provide them with a quality education.

One of these innovative approaches is the “Education Cannot Wait – First Emergency Response” (ECW-FER) program, which provides rapid education responses in the first 72 hours of a crisis. This program has been a game-changer in providing immediate education support to children affected by crisis, ensuring that they do not miss out on their right to education.

Sherif also highlighted the role of creativity in building resilience and promoting peace in crisis-affected communities. “Education is not just about learning math and science. It is also about fostering creativity and critical thinking skills to equip children and youth with the tools they need to become active and engaged citizens,” she said.

ECW has been working towards this goal by integrating psychosocial support and peacebuilding activities into its education programs. These efforts not only help children heal from the trauma of conflict but also promote social cohesion and peaceful coexistence in their communities.

In her statement, Sherif also emphasized the need for partnerships and collaboration to drive creativity and innovation in education. ECW works closely with governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and other partners to ensure that children living in crisis situations have access to quality education. “By working together, we can create a more resilient and peaceful world for our children, where their creativity and talents are nurtured and celebrated,” Sherif said.

As we mark World Creativity and Innovation Day, it is important to remember that education is not just a fundamental human right, but also a key enabler for sustainable development and a peaceful future. Education Cannot Wait remains committed to harnessing the power of creativity and innovation to ensure that no child is left behind, regardless of their circumstances.

In conclusion, Education Cannot Wait Director Yasmine Sherif’s statement on World Creativity and Innovation Day highlights the vital role of creativity and innovation in providing quality education to children and youth affected by crisis. Through its innovative approaches and partnerships, ECW is working towards a brighter and more sustainable future for all children, leaving no one behind. Let us celebrate this day by unleashing our creativity and working together to build a better world for generations to come.
