“They Actually Had a List”: ICE Arrests Workers Involved in Landmark Labor Rights Case

in Breaking News
Reading Time: 3 mins read

In a recent raid in western New York, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested several workers who were involved in a landmark labor rights case. This move has sparked concern and outrage among union officials, who believe that the workers were specifically targeted for their involvement in advocating for workers’ rights and unionization.

“We are concerned at the appearance of targeting publicly pro-union worker leaders,” said a union official who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s alarming to see that ICE is now going after workers who are fighting for their rights and the rights of their fellow workers.”

The raid, which took place on a Wednesday morning, saw ICE agents arresting workers at three different locations in western New York. The workers were all employed by Corso’s Flower and Garden Center, a well-known nursery and landscaping company that has been at the center of a labor rights case.

In 2018, workers at Corso’s filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, alleging that they were being paid below minimum wage, denied overtime pay, and subjected to unsafe working conditions. The case gained national attention and was seen as a victory for workers’ rights when a judge ruled in favor of the workers, ordering Corso’s to pay over $500,000 in back wages and damages.

However, the recent ICE raid has raised questions about the timing and motive behind the arrests. Many believe that the workers were targeted because of their involvement in the labor rights case and their outspokenness about the mistreatment they faced at Corso’s.

“They actually had a list of workers they were looking for,” said one worker who was present during the raid. “It was clear that they were targeting those of us who were involved in the lawsuit.”

The Intercept, an online news publication, covered the story and highlighted the concerns raised by union officials and workers. The article, titled “They Actually Had a List: ICE Arrests Workers Involved in Landmark Labor Rights Case,” shed light on the situation and the potential implications it could have on the labor movement.

The Intercept reached out to ICE for comment but did not receive a response. The agency has not released any official statement regarding the raid and the arrest of the workers.

The timing of the raid is also concerning as it comes at a time when the Trump administration has been cracking down on immigration and ramping up efforts to deport undocumented immigrants. This has caused fear and anxiety among immigrant communities, who are now worried about being targeted for simply standing up for their rights.

The recent ICE raid has sparked outrage and condemnation from labor unions and organizations, with many calling for an immediate investigation into the matter. The AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, released a statement expressing their concern and calling on ICE to stop targeting workers who are fighting for their rights.

“This is a clear attack on workers and their right to organize,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “We demand that ICE stop these unjust and inhumane actions and instead focus on real threats to our communities.”

The arrests of the workers have also sparked protests and rallies, with supporters gathering to show their solidarity and demand justice for the workers. The hashtag #JusticeForCorsoWorkers has been trending on social media, with people sharing their outrage and calling for accountability.

The raid in western New York is a disturbing reminder of the current climate in the United States, where immigrant workers are being targeted and their rights are being disregarded. It also highlights the importance of standing in solidarity with workers and supporting their fight for fair treatment and better working conditions.

We must continue to speak out against these unjust actions and demand that workers’ rights be respected and protected. As the labor movement and the fight for workers’ rights continue, we must not forget the workers who have been arrested and stand with them in their fight for justice. Together, we can and will create a better and fairer future for all workers.
