Trump Could Use Sacred Native Land for a Monument to… Christopher Columbus

in Breaking News
Reading Time: 2 mins read

The Trump administration has recently put forth a controversial proposal that has raised concerns among Native American communities. According to The Intercept, the proposal involves building a national statue garden on sacred Native land, which is currently owned by a wealthy South Dakota mining family. Furthermore, the proposed monument is said to honor Christopher Columbus, a figure that has long been a source of controversy due to his violent treatment of Indigenous peoples.

The idea of using Native land for the construction of a monument to Columbus is not only disrespectful, but it also highlights the ongoing struggles faced by Native communities in protecting their sacred sites. As the descendants of the original inhabitants of this land, Native Americans have a deep connection to these sites and should have a say in how they are used and preserved.

The proposed national statue garden is a part of President Trump’s plan to promote patriotism and nationalistic ideals. However, it is clear that this plan has been developed without taking into consideration the voices and concerns of Native Americans. This is not the first time that the Trump administration has disregarded the rights of Indigenous communities, as seen with the recent decision to reduce the size of the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah, a sacred site for Native American tribes.

The idea of honoring Christopher Columbus with a grand monument is also problematic. While he is often portrayed as a hero and discoverer, the reality is far from that. Columbus’ arrival in the Americas led to the decimation of Indigenous communities through violence, disease, and forced labor. He is not a figure that should be celebrated or glorified, especially on sacred Native land.

The proposed monument is a stark reminder of the ongoing erasure of Native American history and culture. By exploiting their land for a nationalistic agenda, the Trump administration is perpetuating a cycle of colonization and oppression. It is time to recognize the continued struggles of Native communities and respect their sovereignty over their sacred sites.

Moreover, the use of Native land for the proposed monument also raises concerns about the preservation of these sites. The mining industry has a long history of inflicting irreparable damage to the environment and natural resources. By allowing a wealthy mining family to own and exploit sacred Native land, we are putting these important sites at risk. The potential destruction of these sites not only disrespects Native American heritage but also harms the environment for future generations.

Instead of using Native land for a monument to Columbus, the Trump administration should focus on promoting a more accurate and inclusive understanding of American history. This could include honoring Indigenous leaders and recognizing their contributions to our nation, rather than glorifying a colonizer who perpetuated violence and oppression.

In conclusion, the proposal to build a national statue garden on sacred Native land is a disrespectful and misguided plan that highlights the ongoing struggles of Indigenous communities in protecting their heritage. The glorification of Christopher Columbus and the exploitation of Native land for a nationalistic agenda must be opposed. It is time for the Trump administration to listen to the voices of Native American communities and respect their sovereignty over their sacred sites. Let’s not allow the erasure of Native American history to continue, and instead, work towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
