Smacking ban would be ‘heavy-handed’, warns Tory critic at Westminster

In a recent speech in Parliament, former MP Lord Jackson of Peterborough made a compelling argument for the use of “reasonable chastisement” as a form of discipline for children. He argued that this age-old practice, which has been used by parents for generations, is harmless and should not be criminalized.

Lord Jackson began his speech by acknowledging the importance of protecting children from abuse and violence. He emphasized that any form of physical punishment that causes harm or injury to a child is unacceptable and should be punished by law. However, he also stressed that there is a clear distinction between abuse and reasonable chastisement, and it is crucial to recognize this difference.

The former MP pointed out that reasonable chastisement is a form of discipline that has been used by parents for centuries. It involves a mild and controlled physical punishment, such as a light smack on the hand or bottom, to correct a child’s behavior. This method is not intended to cause harm or pain but rather to teach children right from wrong and instill discipline and respect.

Lord Jackson argued that reasonable chastisement is a necessary tool for parents, especially in today’s society where children are exposed to various forms of negative influences. He stated that children need boundaries and consequences for their actions, and reasonable chastisement provides just that. It is a way for parents to show their children that there are consequences for their behavior and to guide them towards making better choices in the future.

Moreover, the former MP highlighted the fact that reasonable chastisement has been proven to be effective in disciplining children. He cited a study by the University of Oxford, which found that children who received mild physical punishment were less likely to engage in delinquent behavior compared to those who did not. This further supports the argument that reasonable chastisement is a harmless and effective form of discipline.

Lord Jackson also addressed the concerns raised by opponents of reasonable chastisement, who argue that it can lead to an escalation of violence and abuse. He firmly stated that there is no evidence to support this claim. In fact, he argued that criminalizing reasonable chastisement would only lead to more harm as it would prevent parents from using this method of discipline and leave them with no other options.

In conclusion, Lord Jackson of Peterborough made a strong case for the use of reasonable chastisement as a form of discipline for children. He emphasized that this method is not intended to cause harm or pain but rather to teach children right from wrong and instill discipline. He also highlighted its effectiveness and the lack of evidence to support the claim that it leads to an escalation of violence. It is time for society to recognize the value of reasonable chastisement and not criminalize it. After all, as the former MP stated, “a little smack on the hand is not a crime, it’s a form of discipline.”
