LAPD Won’t Do Immigration Enforcement — But Will Shoot You With Rubber Bullets for Protesting ICE

Los Angeles, known as the “City of Angels”, has always been a vibrant and diverse community. It is a city that embraces people from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, or immigration status. This is why, in 2017, the city passed a set of sanctuary laws that restrict the cooperation between local police and federal immigration enforcement agents, also known as ICE. These laws were meant to protect the immigrant population and allow them to feel safe and secure in their home.

However, recent events have shown that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) does not always uphold these sanctuary laws. During the recent ICE raids, the LAPD was out in full force to repress any protests against the raids. This is a shocking turn of events as the very purpose of sanctuary laws is to prevent such actions from happening.

The sanctuary laws in Los Angeles prohibit the LAPD from participating in immigration enforcement, except in specific situations. This means that they cannot assist ICE in detaining or deporting undocumented immigrants unless there is a warrant or they have committed a serious crime. The intention of these laws is to keep families together and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

However, it seems that the LAPD has taken it upon themselves to interpret these laws as they see fit. During the recent ICE raids, the LAPD was present in large numbers, equipped with riot gear and rubber bullets. Instead of protecting the protestors, they were using excessive force to disperse them. This contradictory behavior has raised concerns among the immigrant community and their supporters.

The fact that the LAPD, a police force charged with upholding the law, is using violence against peaceful protestors is deeply troubling. It goes against the very essence of sanctuary laws and the values of the city of Los Angeles. These laws were not put in place to give the LAPD the authority to suppress dissenting voices, but to protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

The recent ICE raids have caused panic and fear in the immigrant community, and they have every right to express their concerns and stand up for their rights. Instead of supporting them, the LAPD chose to use their authority to silence their voices. It is a clear violation of their duty to serve and protect the citizens of Los Angeles.

The use of excessive force by the LAPD during the protests against ICE raids is even more concerning considering the current political climate. The Trump administration has been aggressively targeting immigrant communities, and the sanctuary laws in Los Angeles were meant to provide a safe haven for them. But with the LAPD’s actions, it seems that even the sanctuary policies cannot protect the immigrant community from violence and discrimination.

It is essential for the LAPD to understand that their duty is to uphold the law, not to enforce their personal beliefs. The sanctuary laws in Los Angeles were put in place to create a safe and inclusive environment for all residents, regardless of their immigration status. The actions of the LAPD during the recent protests only serve to undermine the trust and confidence of the community in law enforcement.

As a city, we must stand together and demand accountability from the LAPD. It is their responsibility to uphold the laws and protect the rights of all individuals, without discrimination. We cannot allow them to use their authority to suppress the voices of those who are fighting for justice and equality.

In conclusion, the recent events in Los Angeles have exposed a significant flaw in the city’s sanctuary laws. While they restrict cooperation between the LAPD and ICE, they do not prevent the police from using excessive force against peaceful protestors. This is a clear violation of the rights of the immigrant community and goes against the values of the City of Angels. It is time for the LAPD to fulfill their duty and respect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. We must continue to stand together and demand justice for all.
