From Conflict to Climate Crusade, Refugees Lead the Charge in Kenya

in Politics
Reading Time: 2 mins read

At just 18 years old, Lionel Ngukusenge has already faced more challenges than most people will in a lifetime. Born in Burundi, Lionel was forced to flee his home country due to a repressive regime that threatened his safety and well-being. He found refuge at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, but even here, he faced another formidable opponent: climate change.

Despite the hardships he has endured, Lionel has not let his circumstances defeat him. In fact, he has used them as a source of motivation and determination. As a Grade 9 student at Future Primary School, Lionel has taken it upon himself to make a positive impact on his surroundings by planting trees.

At his homestead in the Kakuma refugee camp, Lionel has planted an impressive 70 trees. This may seem like a small number, but for someone who has lived most of his life in a refugee camp, it is a significant achievement. It is a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

Lionel’s passion for planting trees stems from his deep understanding of the importance of preserving the environment. He has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of climate change, from extreme weather conditions to droughts that have resulted in food shortages. As a refugee, he has also experienced the vulnerability of living in an environment that is constantly threatened by natural disasters.

But instead of feeling helpless, Lionel has taken action. He has educated himself on the importance of trees in mitigating the effects of climate change and has taken it upon himself to spread this knowledge to others in the refugee camp. Through his actions, he hopes to inspire others to join him in his mission to make a positive impact on the environment.

Lionel’s dedication to planting trees has not gone unnoticed. His efforts have been recognized by the Kakuma Refugee Camp administration, who have commended him for his initiative and hard work. They have also provided him with the necessary tools and resources to continue his tree-planting project.

For Lionel, planting trees is not just about combatting climate change, it is also a way of giving back to the community that has welcomed him with open arms. He believes that by planting trees, he is not only helping to preserve the environment but also improving the lives of those around him.

Despite the many challenges he has faced, Lionel remains optimistic about the future. He dreams of a world where everyone takes responsibility for protecting the environment and works together to create a better, more sustainable future for all. And he is determined to do his part, one tree at a time.

As he continues his education at Future Primary School, Lionel hopes to inspire his classmates and fellow refugees to join him in his tree-planting project. He envisions a greener, healthier Kakuma refugee camp, and with his determination and hard work, he is well on his way to making this vision a reality.

Lionel’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Despite the many obstacles he has faced, he has not let them hold him back. Instead, he has used them as fuel to make a positive impact on the world around him. Through his actions, he has shown that no matter where you come from or what challenges you face, you have the power to make a difference.
